Is a Ph.D of any use outside the academic/research field?

I'm considering enrolling on a Ph.D program in the Politics area of study, however I'm not interested in following an academic/research professional career. Would a Ph.D degree be of any use for any other jobs or would employers simply ignore it and focus on applicants with other professional skills and competences? Thanks!
